NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 8/12

 

You see right through us, Lord,

you're never fooled by the practiced smile,

the smug grin, our crocodile tears,

feigned innocence, a stiff upper lip,

eyes, cast down in hidden grief,

a game face set to shield our pain...

 

You see through all our masks, Lord,

you're fluent in our body language;

you see through what we choose to show

right through to what we try to hide...

 

You see into our heart of hearts,

to where we stand bare naked:

    stripped of all disguise and costume,

    souls bereft of all pretension,

    no facade or fig leaf left 

    to cover up the truth of who we are...

We fear the vulnerability

of being seen, of being known

for who we are, where we are and as we are

but you, Lord, love us just as you find us,

not for what we might or should become,

but just for who we are:

    your daughters and your sons

    created in your image,

    fashioned by your love

    quickened by your Spirit...

 

Help us see and love within ourselves

all you treasure in our hearts

and help us see and love in every soul

the beauty and the goodness

of every one you've made, Lord,

in your image and your likeness...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake

and watch over us while we sleep

that awake, we might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...
