NIGHT PRAYER: Monday 8/8

I suppose, Lord,
that our fear of the dark began when we were children
when, on a daily basis, the setting sun took leave of us
and stole away with all that helped us reckon where we were,
where we'd been and what might lie ahead...

There were, of course, the moon and the stars
but even by their light,
our way was not as sure,
our future not as certain as what we knew
in the light that shone by day...

And growing up, we soon discovered
that even in the noon day sun
we can still be lost in the dark,
in the shadows of not knowing,
in the midnight of our fears and worries,
stumbling and groping our way
searching for what's real and true,
longing for the light...

A nightlight in the bedroom
may bring comfort to a child
but the daytime clouds of darkness
need a stronger, brighter lamp...

Be the light in our darkness, Lord,
and burn so bright that night becomes our friend:
a time, a place to trust in you who lead us,
    through whatever darkness hides,
with the promise of a  light, a life, a day, a way
to peace that has no end...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
