NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 8/24

Today is the 31st anniversary of the independence of Ukraine from the Soviet Union.  Speaking of Russia's invasion nearly seven months ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky said:

A new nation emerged on February 24 at 4 a.m. Not born, but reborn. A nation that didn't cry, didn't scream, didn't get scared. Didn't run away. Didn't give up. Didn't forget," He added: "Every new day is a new reason not to give up. Because, having gone through so much, we have no right not to reach the end. What is the end of the war for us? We used to say: Peace. Now we say: Victory."

Here's a moving photo of young Ukrainians dancing in the streets of Odessa, a grain port to the world, a target and obsession of Russia's Vladimir Putin.

In our own, personal conflicts, Lord,
in the face of what invades our serenity and peace,
when confronted with what's grim, bleak and hopeless,
when we're fatigued by estrangement and hostility:
give us strength to stand with you
        and stand our ground,
give us will to persevere though thick and thin,
give us courage to be brave when we are weak,
give us cause not to give up
        and heart to carry on
until with you we find the victory
in the grace that you have promised
    to those who follow you
on the path from death to life...

Let the words of President Zelensky,
the dancers in Odessa
and the power of your Spirit, Lord,
bring faith and hope and even joy
to each and all of us
until your peace is all we know...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
