NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 10/14

Maybe it's the lengthening shadows, Lord,
the darkening, clouded skies,

tempting me to worry,

to imagine and to fear the worst,
as day fades into night...

The nighttime leaves me blind 

to daylight's guiding landmarks:
    I lose my bearings,  

    stumbling in the dark to find my way
    as imagination beckons me

    down paths of nagging doubt...

But what if, Lord, at each day's end,

I prayed to you for grace

    to clear my mind of cares, 

        and my soul of its foreboding;

    to hush my troubled thoughts

        and sweep away my fears;

    to relive and ease my sorrow

        and wipe away my tears...

 

Help me to imagine

    the light and joy, the calm and peace

that's yours to give in love, Lord,

    and mine to have in faith...

To imagine...

 
Help me, Lord, imagine,

to trust in, long and hope for,

all you've prepared for me:

    what's far beyond my ken

        and transcends my fondest dreams;

    what waits in store to heal me

        and mend my broken parts;

    what holds the power to make me whole 

        where this night, I am not...

 

Grant me, Lord, this evening,

    whatever grace I need 

to hope for and to trust

    what I can only now imagine...

Protect me, Lord while I'm awake,

keep vigil while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...
