On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight's prayer comes from just one verse in the psalm after the first reading at mass:
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit...
and saves those who are crushed in spirit...
(Psalm 34:18)
God of broken hearts,
be close to those whose loss is great,
who grieve a loved one's absence,
whose tears flow like a running stream,
who ache to hold what's slipped away...
God of all compassion,
come, heal my broken heart...
God of broken homes,
make your dwelling in our midst,
reconcile our divisions,
mend what's broken in a marriage,
be the heart of family life...
God of all compassion,
come, heal my family's brokenness...
God of broken dreams,
heal our pain and disappointment,
restore our trust where it's been lost,
refresh our hope for what might be,
open our hearts to dream anew...
God of all compassion,
come, heal my broken dreams...
God of broken faith,
resolve the doubts that haunt our thoughts,
unveil what clouds our understanding,
help us trust beyond our reach,
to walk by faith and not by sight...
God of all compassion,
come, heal trust, make whole my faith...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

God of all our prayers,
your are there in all our sorrows,
every burden, scar and struggle:
you are all we need;
when our lives are filled with loss
you ease our pain
and bear our crosses,
you are always there,
God of all our prayers...
