'Round this time of year, Lord, 

    our hearts are very tender,

vulnerable to memories

    happy, sad, intense...

 

It's when we long to be together

    but we're feeling all alone,

when we thirst for just a sip of joy

    but find our cup's run dry...

 

It's when we're most in need of comfort

    but our hearts go unconsoled,

when we reach for arms to hold us

    but find no warm embrace...

It's when we long to know you're there, Lord,

    to know you're close at hand,

when we need to know you hold us

    and you'll never let us go...

 

It's when we need to feel your gentle hand

    reach out to heal our pain

and mend the scattered pieces

    of our hurting, broken hearts...

And it's 'round this time of year, Lord,

we remember your sweet birth:

    a tender, helpless babe in arms,

       vulnerable and defenseless... 

 

You know our lot, you've felt our pain,

    you've ached for help and comfort,

so we trust you'll bring us peace, Lord,

    and never let us go... 

 

So, every year, around this time,

our tender hearts surrender:

    please hold us, Lord, in your embrace,

        and never let us go...

 

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake.

keep vigil while we sleep

that awake, we keep the watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
