First, a little review of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit
whose coming we will celebrate this Sunday on Pentecost...
Wisdom
(seeing with the eyes of God)
Understanding
(taking seriously all God asks of me)
Counsel
(the Spirit's grace shaping my conscience)
Fortitude
(strength to live the Lord's Word with joy)
Knowledge
(grasping God's relationship with all of creation)
Piety
(reliance on God, especially in the hard times)
Fear of the Lord
(awareness of who I am, how I stand, before God)
I've received the gifts of your Spirit, Lord,
though I may have left them unopened!
There's nothing I lack, nothing more I need,
to grow in faith, to grasp your Word,
to live by the Gospel, to do what you ask,
to judge wisely and stand, humbly before you
in need of your mercy, your pardon and peace...
I'm not even sure which gifts I need most
or how, more likely, I need them all!
So I pray for your Spirit to come upon me
and open the eyes of my soul
to all the ways I need your compassion,
your gifts, and the power of your grace...
(Take some time to reflect on the list of the Spirit's gifts
and pray for the grace to know what you need
and to open your heart to the Spirit's help...)
Come, Holy Spirit, come live in my heart
and grant me the gift of your grace...Come, Holy Spirit, come live in my heart
and help me to grow in my faith...Come, Holy Spirit, come live in my heart
and help me to find your peace...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
