In the yard outside my sister's shop
three beautiful aspens
stand at attention
enjoying their light summer duty
having weathered
the winter's cold and snow...
Summer, fall, winter, spring,
they never complain,
their only words
the whispers of their leaves
each time the Spirit passes by...
How loyal, how faithful they are
to the orders they've been given:
"Stand up, stand still, stand tall, stand guard,
before the Lord your God!
Stand together, sibling aspens,
stand in awe before your Maker!
Stand firm where you've been planted,
stand together, stand as one!
Stand in awe and give God glory,
stand in silence through the night;
stand watch and stand in vigil
for the dawn's first breaking light!"
A small stand of aspens, Lord:
faithful to you,
faithful to their calling,
faithful to their place
in your universe of love...
And so I pray...
Make me today, Lord,
as faithful as an aspen...
Give me the grace
to stand up for what is true,
to stand still in all the chaos,
to stand tall before my fears,
to stand guard in face of danger,
to stand as one with all around me,
to stand firm in faith and hope,
to stand watch for your appearance,
to stand in awe before your face,
to stand in silence, bowed in prayer,
to stand in gratitude and praise,
my arms as branches lifted up,
waiting for your Spirit's breeze
to stir my heart and whisper peace...
A small stand of aspens, Lord:
faithful to you,
faithful to their calling,
faithful to their place
in your universe of love...
And so I pray:
make me today, Lord,
as faithful as an aspen…
Amen.
