Morning Coffee by George Mendoza |
Good morning, good God!
What shall we offer this morning, Lord?
What might we offer this morning
for the gift of peace in the world?
What might we offer this morning
for an end to the horror of war?
What might we offer this morning
for the poor in the line of fire?
What might we offer this morning
in return for the innocent slain?
What might we offer this morning
for the healing of all the wounded?
What might we offer this morning
for the comfort of those who suffer?
What might we offer this morning
for the solace of those who grieve?
What might we offer this morning
to account for our foolish and lethal ways?
What might we offer this morning
to atone for our stubborn refusal to change?
What can we do this morning, Lord,
but lament what we've done - and have not done?
And the Lord answers:
Here is what I ask:
that you do what is just, love what is good
and walk humbly at my side... (Micah 6:8)
And here's the offering I desire,
a broken and contrite heart;
a heart bruised and broken
Our spirits are broken, Lord,
battered and bruised
and we come to you with contrite hearts...
Teach us to know what is honest and fair
and give us the courage to do what is just
in our homes, in our towns,
where we work, where we play...
Help us to know what is good, O Lord,
and give us a heart to love what is pure,
to cherish the lovely, to treasure the truth,
to prize the sacred and adore the holy...
And help us, Lord, to follow your steps
and faithfully walk by your side
on the path of wisdom that leads us to peace,
home to you and your love….
Amen.
