Night Prayer on Sundays will draw its focus from an element of the day's mass. This prayer finds its origin in today's first reading from Isaiah: Comfort my people...
Lord, we're all in need of your comfort
- on all fronts, in every place
and in so many different ways...
We need the comfort of your promise
and comfort we can offer one another...
We need the comfort we find
gathering together in this virtual chapel of prayer...
We need the comfort that only you can give
and the comfort you share with us
through the company and consolation
of our families, friends and neighbors...
We need the comfort you offer us in faith:
not just an end to our problems and pain
but, more importantly,
a way to live with our troubles
and through our present circumstances,
a way to endure our hard times
until the comfort of your everlasting peace
is ours, at last- forever...
Though our failures deserve your judgment, Lord,
speak a tender word of mercy
to pardon our sins and faults...
And in these difficult times in our world, Lord,
help us comfort one another,
speaking tenderly to all who look for your kindness
and seek your peace in our words and deeds...
Comfort us, your people, Lord,
and grant us your salvation...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in comfort and in peace...
Amen.
Two arrangements tonight of the well known tenor solo
from Handel's Messiah: first, a gospel setting arranged by
Mervyn Warren and sung by Daryl Coley and Vanessa
Bell Armstrong and the traditional setting performed by
Rufus Miller. I hope you'll listen to and pray with both
arrangements!
