How do we forget this, Lord?
Or is this something we've yet to learn?
How do we fail to understand
that this is what Christmas is all about:
your inseparable intimacy with humankind!
And if that's what Christmas is all about,
can Advent be concerned with anything less?
Advent prepares us, reminds us,
refreshes in us our belief,
that we are preparing to celebrate
your loving, inseparable intimacy
with all of us,
with each of us
- without a single exception...
Or as Saint Paul put it:
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of Godthat is in Christ Jesus our Lord... (Romans 8:38-39)
Not trees and tinsel, not wreaths and ribbons,
not elves on shelves or garland and gifts
but only this one eternal grace,
the blessing of Advent and Christmas:
your inseparable, consuming, intimate love
with all of us,
with each of us
- without a single exception...
Amen.
