NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 1/10

 

In my more lucid moments, Lord, 

I wonder why, so often, 

    I wander from your path,

    the reason I'm so easily drawn to sin,

    how it is I ever fail in love,

when all around me  your grace abounds, 

offering me whatever I need

    to love what is good,

    to do what is just

    and to walk humbly by your side...

Night and day, though I'm awake or asleep,

your grace leads and follows me,

    surrounding me on all sides,

    filling me from without 

    and dwelling deep within my soul

to strengthen and protect me,

to turn my heart and thoughts

    to all that's true and good and pure,

    to all that's right and pleasing in your sight,

    to all that helps me grow in love of you

    and of my neighbor, near and far...

 

Like the fish in the sea, Lord,

    I live my life in an ocean of grace

but distractions and temptations,

    my will and my desires 

delude and seduce me, deceiving and enticing me 

    to think, even for a moment, 

that I've found a place,

    a time, a moment of my own,

        apart from you, alone, 

where I might go or do or seek

    what your grace would never bless...

I pray, then, Lord, for grace, more grace,

    for grace to keep me in your grace

when I'm tempted to pretend

that apart from you I'd ever find, even for a moment, 

    the love for which you made me,

    the joy for which you destine me,

    the life that brings me peace...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

    and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

    and asleep, rest in your peace...
