NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 2/7

Unlike Advent, when so much reminds us that Christmas is approaching, there's little to put us in a Lenten frame of mind-and-heart each year before Easter.  Of a sudden and without warning, you wake up one day and it's Ash Wednesday!  This year, February 14 will be the day for ashes (as well as Valentine hearts and flowers). That's still a week away  -  but in anticipation (and for better preparation) I'm posting some Here Comes Lent! prayers to help us get ready.  This is the third in that series...

I came across this sign on line, Lord...

Oh, Lord, how much we need (all of us),
how much we need to trust these words
and put our faith in you...

I call you omnipotent,
    almighty and all powerful
but sometimes I live, I fret
    as though I carry burdens
that you cannot fix or patch,
that you fail to mend or heal,
that you won't repair or remedy
        - or just choose to ignore...

But nothing's beyond your reach, Lord,
    no problem outwits your counsel,
        no dilemma defies your solving,
no wound bleeds past your healing...

I'm always in your care, Lord,
but I do not know your plans:
plans to prosper, not to harm me,
        to deliver me from harm,
to resolve my grief and worry,
plans to bring me peace and calm,
to help me find my joy in you...

I do not know your schedule:
why you sometimes move so quickly
        and at other times you tarry;
I don't know how you time things,
        how you measure days and years;
    I'm impatient with your patience
        with the pace your wisdom sets;
I concede to what I fear
because I'm slow to trust your plan...

Help me believe, Lord, even now,
in this moment, as I pray,
that I'm held fast in your arms,
that you know my every fear,
that you see what I cannot yet see
and know what I cannot yet know,
that you're reaching to my pain
with your mercy and your healing
that especially in my darkest times
your light shines warm and bright...

Help me see, Lord, what you're doing,
how you're moving in my life,
how you're healing, mending, fixing
just what wounds and pains and breaks me
how your plans for me are gracious,
    filled with peace and consolation...

Give me patience with your timing,
help me see the long and short,
give me eyes to see as you see
    and a heart to know your ways;
free my soul to feel your presence
wrapping me in your strong arms
and let nothing keep me, Lord,
from the plans you have for me...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Sometimes I feel so small
I wonder what God wants from me,
 what will I be

I listen for his call
and try to wait so patiently
 though I may not see

When I cannot find my way
 I just remember
 the promise he made

I know the plans I have for you
I know exactly what to do
I will work a wonder for your good
I will listen when you pray
give you peace for each new day
trust in me your whole life through
I know the plans I have for you

The working of his hand
sometimes seems so strange to me,
 it’s a mystery

I try to understand
 and follow everywhere he leads
 for my heart believes

When I cannot see the end
 I hear him saying
 again and again

Refrain

Search me with all your heart
seek me and you will find
 the future filled with hope
 the purpose for your life

Refrain
