Night Prayer on Fridays in Lent will focus on different images of the face of Jesus. This evening's subject is a statue at National Memorial in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The statue is titled And Jesus Wept (John 11:35)
Lord, you wept at the death of your friend, Lazarus
and you weep over all our pain and loss...
You weep at the ways we turn our backs
on the hungry, the homeless, the desperately poor...
You weep when we prefer the arms of war
to arms open wide in peace...
You weep at how we cheapen life's gift
with our policies, laws and judgments...
You weep over hearts both angry and bitter,
hardened by grudges, envy and pride...
You weep at our disregard of your word,
of your wisdom, your truth and your way...
You weep when we fail to ask for your pardon,
offered always so freely and there for the asking...
You weep when we fail to dry the tears
of those who ask us for comfort and solace...
You weep over my sins, the small and the large,
and wait for me to turn back to you...
You weep for us all with heartfelt compassion:
may your tears bathe our souls
in your kindness and mercy,
and bring us the joy
that flows from your heart...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

When Jesus wept, the falling tear
In mercy flowed beyond all bound;
When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear
Seized all the guilty world around.
