Sometimes, Lord
(though not nearly often enough)
sometimes I have moments
when it seems that I can see
(or at least catch a glimpse) of how thickly, densely woven
is the story of each person
with the history, joy and sorrow
of everyone we know...
how each of us is branded
with a thousand different hashtags
connecting us in networks
of a great unfolding mystery...
how each life is a living sponge
soaking up and holding in
an ocean of emotion
in endless streams
of human peace and pain...
how each one's shouldering more
than he can take, endure and handle;
how each one's carrying more
than she can brook, sustain and bear;
how we're all embracing burdens
that weigh on every heart
and yet, and still we make our way
from day through night to day...
Sometimes, Lord
(though not nearly often enough)
sometimes I have moments
when it seems that I can see
(or at least catch a glimpse of) the tender vulnerability
of human fragility
and the blessed grace
that comes from you
and holds us all,
together...
So, when those moments, come,
make me patient with my neighbor
and patient with myself
and grateful, Lord, to you
who are our mercy, strength
and peace...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fear relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Twas grace that led me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we'd first begun.
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fear relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Twas grace that led me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we'd first begun.
