You GO, Taylor!
As someone who daily mourns the slow death of the language we speak, my spirits soared when I came across this video from Taylor Mali! I laughed and laughed - and rejoiced!

What a riot....I enjoyed it. It is so true. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteTaylor was just great. One of his lines I especially liked was: "I'm just like inviting you to join me on the bandwagon of my own uncertainty." I think you should show this on a big screen for one of our youth get-togethers. I think they would get a major kick out of it. Awesome...wicked cool...ya know!
ReplyDeleteI heard on WBZ the other day that David McCullough had been the commencement speaker (I think at BC.) In his address he asked the students to eliminate "awesome," "umm," "like ya know," etc., from their vocabularies. It was a nice follow- up to Taylor. Don't know if David McCullough's talk is available on-line. Might be fun to share it on your blog.
ReplyDeleteIn yesterday's Globe David McCullough's commencement address at BC was featured. The part I had heard on WBZ and was quoted in the Globe was:
ReplyDelete"He also pleaded with graduates to rid the vernacular of a "verbal virus": the rampant use of "like," "you know," "awesome," and "actually."
"Just imagine if in his inaugural address John F. Kennedy had said, "Ask not what your country can, you know, do for you, but what you can, like, do for your country, actually."
