Vatican II: Bishops gathered in St. Peter's Basilica |
Thursday, October 11, marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican Council II.
Here's some video of the opening ceremony with narration in Italian. I don't speak Italian but I still found it helpful to watch the visual here, to see the faces of those whose words, work and decisions changed so profoundly who we understand the Church and live as Christ's Body in the world.
On Rocco's page, you'll find the complete text of the address with which Pope John XXIII opened the Council, delivered in Latin.
The pope's first words that day were these, "Gaudet Mater Ecclesia!" Mother Church rejoices! I ask you to pray that the Church, our Mother, continue to rejoice in the work begun with Vatican Council II.
