The desert and the parched land will exult;
the arid plains will rejoice and bloom;
They will bloom with flowers
and rejoice with joyful song.
-Isaiah 35:1
(From the first reading for the Third Sunday of Advent: December 15)
Some days my soul's a desert, Lord:
parched, lifeless and thirsting
for the waters of mercy, peace and joy...
But even the desert knows to hope
a time will come again when the barren will bloom
and the waters of your grace beckon
to a sweet oasis of your presence...
Visit my heart's desert, Lord, and as you promised
bring to flower what waits within me:
lead me to your shade and to your waters,
to your mercy, to your peace
and once again to joy...
Amen.
