Pause for Prayer: SUNDAY 12/15

Photo: Jeff Holmes

So busy are we
about so many trivial things...

Perhaps that's why, Lord,
you spent the night
blanketing us with snow,
slowing our steps,
hitting our pause button,
and grinding our usual traffic
to a halt...

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

We needed that, Lord.
we needed to be inconvenienced,
interrupted, slowed down
- stopped -
by the pure, soft beauty
of your presence,
settling gently, flake by flake;
dressing us and our world
in a garment of pure grace...

Let your snow fall upon our upturned faces, Lord,
and as a child catches snow flakes on the tongue
so let us taste the sweetness
of your wintry advent...

Are we too old, Lord,
for making angels in the snow?
Then send some snowy angels
to make of us
what you would have us be...

Even as the snow chills our limbs
let your touch melt our hearts
and draw us all inside
to where the fire of your love
burns for us always,
crackling, bright and warm...

Remind us, Lord,
of those who are burdened by the weather
and empty our purses and pockets
in support of those who serve and shelter them...

And later in the day, Lord,
when the snow will slow and stop
and our pace quicken once again:
even then, keep us mindful of the moments
when the blanket of your presence
calmed and warmed our hearts,
so very close to you...

Amen.
