Word for the Weekend: SEPTEMBER 18

This weekend brings us to the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings for this Sunday and commentary on them can be found here. Going to Mass with children? Here you'll find hints for helping youngsters prepare to hear the Lord's Word on Sunday.

Again this weekend the lectionary offers a longer and a shorter form of the gospel. The longer form includes the parable of the "unjust" or "shrewd" steward who cuts deals with his master's debtors to secure his own position. The parable is followed by a short collection of sayings on how one serves one's rightful master (the Lord Jesus!). The shorter form of the gospel includes only the collection of sayings and omits the longer parable.

The first lesson, from the prophet Amos, addresses some very unjust merchants whose business dealings cheat the very poor. Amos warns that the Lord will not forget their shameless abuse of those in need.

The second lesson is from 1st Timothy and includes some guidelines for Church ministry and the liturgical activities of the Christian assembly. You'll see here some of the roots of our own intercessions at Sunday Mass. The passage concludes with testimony to Christ and an admonition that we pray without anger or argument between us.

NOW's the time to click on those links above and to begin perusing and praying over these texts. There's just no better way to prepare to hear the Word on Sunday!
