This year's edition of the
Christmas Eve/Christmas Day/after Christmas sales marathon
- is over, Lord!
Somehow we've made it from December 24 through December 27
- and for that we're grateful...
But so much hype, too much hype;
too much money spent,
too much money spent on things,
on things not really needed...
So many huge expectations
- and not just a few went unmet...
So much anticipation
for such a narrow window of time
- so easily, so often afterwards
clouded with disappointment...
So much build-up
and too much let-down...
And all of this in your name:
Lord, have mercy on us!
Between the cleaning up and settling down,
between the trips to catch the sales
and return the gifts we didn't really need:
give us the gift of some quiet time today
to recollect what this was all about:
A baby born two thousand years agoHelp us keep it simple, Lord,
whose life and words and death
gave rise
to faith, to hope, to mercy and to love...
help us keep the Christmas story and its message
as simple as it truly is...
Draw us back to the beginning,
to the time when you had nothing
save your mother's love,
the shepherds' awe,
the angels' song of praise...
Let something simple
settle in our hearts, Lord,
giving rise
to love and hope and faith in you
and in your care for us...
Amen.
