Good morning, good God!
Well, yesterday, in rose vestments,
we lit the third candle on the Advent wreath
and we sang and prayed and spoke of joy, Lord,
joy that Christmas is so near...
And as we did all that in our sanctuaries:
our nation continued to divide along party lines;
an earthquake hit the southern Philippines;
nuclear threats persisted in North Korea;
children were trafficked for sex;
Vatican finances were in the headlines;
one in seven people around the globe went hungry
while a third of the world's food was wasted;
the homeless contemplated Christmas on the street;
and people in the pews prayed for:
critically ill family members and friends;
a job to help pay the bills;
the healing of broken families;
courage to face their problems and fears;
consolation in their grief
and relief from anxiety and depression...
O come, O come, Emmanuel and ransom us from
rose colored glasses, robes, tunes and prayers
that may keep us from finding you
in all those times and places
where you come among your own,
your own who mourn in lonely exile
here and there and everywhere,
and not just in Advent or on Christmas
but on every day of every year...
We offer you our minds and hearts
this Advent Monday morning, Lord:
open our eyes, our prayers and souls
to all the ways you come to us
with healing, mercy, peace and joy...
Amen.
