Pause for Prayer: SUNDAY 6/20

Just a few days ago, Lord,
at Mount Auburn for graveside prayers,
I met these two grand dogwoods, huddled together,
keeping prayerful, quiet watch
at the crossroads of simple paths
where the dead sleep and wait and listen
for the trumpet's final call...

At some point, Lord
(how many years ago I'm sure you know)
these dogwoods met,  fell in love,
got engaged, married and now, as all can see
- the two are one...

With nary a discussion, let alone an argument,
they leaned ever closer in a branched embrace,
their lives so intimately braided, closely twined,
that nothing short of death
might put them now asunder...

Would that we, Lord, in our families
in our neighborhoods, among the nations of the world,
would that we might grow as one, into one,
becoming one with you:
our lives joined together, an espousal
as holy, as natural, as beautiful
as dogwoods married in a graveyard,
waiting out their years together, arm in arm,
     until the trumpet's final call...

Amen.
