I spent part of the afternoon at the beach - didn't have my laptop
with me but this was my prayer, as well as I can recall it...
Do you hear what I hear, Lord?
Over there, in that stand of pines,
do you hear in the call of that chirping bird:
a chanted prayer? a litany of pleas for food?
for the welfare of her chicks?
a mantra of praise for you, her Maker?
A small plane buzzes by overhead,
muting the songbird's prayer and I wonder, Lord,
do you hear what I hear?
Do you hear, in the steady hum of engines,
your people's desire to fly, to ascend,
to be set free of gravity's pull
and, all on our own, like Peter Pan,
to rise, free of all that weighs upon us,
all that holds us down when we were made
to rise and be with you,
forever?
Do you hear what I hear, Lord?
Do you hear the soft slip-slap of flip-flops
padding their way to the snack stand?
Do you hear us changing gears, slowing down,
wearing shoes that will not let us run
but rather slow our pace,
our steps, at last, apace with yours
walking by our side, all in your good time?
Do you hear what I hear, Lord?
Do you hear your Spirit's rush
in the gentle onshore breezes
brushing against my warm, bare skin
and moving in my soul?
Do you hear your Spirit's whisper
calling me to the water's edge
to dip my toes in the cool waves
that I might know from head to toe
that you are by my side?
Do you hear what I hear, Lord?
Yes, and more than that,
you hear my thoughts, my heart,
my soul, my prayer,
indeed, Lord,
you hear me...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
