On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its theme from some element
of the day's mass (August 15, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Into Heaven). Tonight we pray with Carey Landry's well-knwon
Hail Mary/Gentle Woman, masterfully arranged here by Lance
Chandler and performed by the Cathedral Singers.
We live in a rough world, Lord,
a rough and tumble, coarse, harsh, unforgiving place
where humankind and nature, too,
make dangerous the streets we walk,
the neighborhoods we live in and the global village
where we've yet to find the way
to live in harmony, in peace,
one family, united...
Fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods
shift the natural balance and claim the lives,
the homes, the hopes of many,
especially the innocent, the young,
the frail and the poor...
Power-hungry greed and lust lay waste
that precious balance meant to keep us all
alive, healthy, growing, flourishing
in the garden of your universe...
For our pleasure, for a dollar, for a vote
we ignore, we betray the human dignity
bestowed on each by you,
our Maker, our Lover, our God...
So we turn today to Mary, gentle woman,
quiet light, morning star, so strong and bright
gentle mother, peaceful dove,
seat of wisdom, heart of love...
Be our mother, be our sister,
filled with just the grace we need
to become your faithful children,
making peace with one another,
kind and gentle with our neighbor
and the world we call our home...
Gentle Mother, peaceful dove,
teach us wisdom; teach us love...
teach us wisdom; teach us love...
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us while we're awake
and watch over us as we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
for Jesus, your Son, our brother
who brings us peace...
Amen.

Hail Mary, Gentle Woman
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
and blest is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of death.
Amen.
Gentle woman, quiet light,
morning star, so strong and bright,
gentle Mother, peaceful dove,
teach us wisdom; teach us love.
You were chosen by the Father;
you were chosen for the Son.
You were chosen from all women
and for woman, shining one.
Blessed are you among women,
blest in turn all women, too.
Blessed they with peaceful spirits.
Blessed they with gentle hearts.
