NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 8/5

When folks ask me

"What did you do on your vacation?"

I often answer, 

"Nothing, really - exactly as I planned!"

 

I love free time, Lord,

time with no demands or expectations,

no schedule, no deadlines...

 

But I'm pretty sure you look at things differently,

that you see my vacation as unimpeded free time 

- for you to work on me!

 

You see my vacation as time apart 

from the diversions that distract me,

turning my eyes from your presence,

my thoughts from your wisdom,

my heart from your word...

 

Vacation clears the deck of my day to day business

and leaves me free to hear your voice

and sense your Spirit nudging me, reaching out

to shape and mold and grow me

in your image, 

in your grace,

in your love...

I'm a work in progress, Lord,

I'm your work in progress,

and vacation's a time to free myself

for how you want to work on me

in ways I don't yet know and might not understand,

to make of me the person you created me to be...

 

Open me to all the ways

you're still working on me, Lord:

    a few repairs, here and there;

    some fine tuning and some detail work,  

    the polishing of tarnished parts

    and whatever updating I need 

    to meet the life that waits me

    at the end of my vacation..

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
