Good morning, good God!
I offer you this day, Lord,
and this week
and however many more tomorrows may remain
in this tale I call my life...
Oh, I'm healthy enough (thank you!) and I'm "only" 74
but that's old enough for me to know
each day I wake's another gift from you:
a grace, a boon, a blessing,
one I cannot take for granted or presume upon
- just that precious is every day that dawns...
But how many tomorrows are mine, Lord?
How many fresh starts, clean slates
and new beginnings
do you see in my future?
And what will I make of them, Lord:
how will I spend them
and where will they take me?
How many days, weeks, months and -
(dare I hope? I know I pray!)
- how many years of days and nights are left
for me to love what's good, do what's just
and walk humbly by your side?
How many Monday mornings, Lord,
to offer you my promises and best intentions,
my hopes and dreams, worries and fears,
my doubts, my faith, my questions and my prayer?
You know the answers to all these questions, Lord,
but I know you're not telling:
it's not mine to know the day, the hour
when my time ends
- and tomorrow is forever...
So I have only this day, Lord,
today's fresh start,
this morning's new beginning
this one day opportunity
to love what's good, to do what's just
and walk humbly by your side...
Every morning, Lord, I've one more day,
the day you've made and given me,
a day to shape and share
in gratitude for all your gifts,
but most of all, a day to thank you
for this gracious Monday morning...
Amen.
