NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 10/17

On Sundays, Night Prayer will focus on an element from the day's celebration of Mass. Tonight we reflect on the piece sung at the preparation of the gifts, The Servant Song.

Every line in this song echoes in my heart, Lord,
and some with a particular intensity...

The grace to let you be my servant, too...
Perhaps because my work is serving others,
I don't always find it easy to welcome the ways
others reach out to serve me.
I pray for the grace, Lord,
    to welcome, gratefully and humbly,
the help and love and patience
            others offer me...

We are here to help each other...
Imagine what the world would be like
if we all truly believed that we were created
        to help each other,
if we all truly believed this was our purpose,
our call, our work, our mission.
Help us see, Lord, how much we need one another,
how much we depend on our neighbors
to help us  to live, to flourish, to grow
and to survive in this crazy world..

I will weep when you are weeping...
Give me a heart, Lord, to share the tears
of those whose hearts are broken,
         burdened and grieving
and give me a heart, Lord, that leaps for joy
    when another's heart is happy.
Let my neighbor's sorrows
weigh on me as if they were my own
and let my neighbor's joys lift me up
and out of my own sadness...

Let me be as Christ to you...
Shape my life in the mold of your love, Lord,
so that those who see me find something of you
        in my words and deeds,
in my open heart and hands
and in how I welcome others,
            friends and strangers,
into my day, my week, my life...

Which lines in the lyrics of The Servant Song
    touch your heart?
Will you bring them to prayer this evening?

Protect us, Lord, while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Will you let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on the journey
We are travelers on the road
We are here to help each other
Walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
In the nighttime of your fear
I will hold my hand out to you
Speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping
When you laugh, I’ll laugh with you
I will share your joy and sorrow
Till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony
Born to all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony.

Will you let me be your servant
Let me be as Christ to you?
Pray that I might have the grace
To let you be my servant too.
