Perhaps there are some, Lord,
whose lives are generally peaceful and calm,
untroubled and serene,
constant, quiet and largely undisturbed...
No, I've never meet such a person, Lord,
- but that doesn't mean he or she doesn't exist!
Rather, the vast majority of us find life to be, too often,
erratic, mercurial and unpredictable,
distressing and unsettled,
disquieting and worrisome...
Don't get me wrong, Lord!
We're grateful for the gift of faith,
running, coursing, flowing,
an underground river
deep within our hearts and souls,
carrying us from day to day while on the surface
we fear the ship will soon go down...
And the peace, Lord,
the times of peace you offer us:
sometimes just a moment,
a flash, a rush, a blink of the eye;
sometimes for an hour or a day;
and sometimes (Praise the Lord!)
for a season sprung from grace...
Those moments, Lord:
moments of untroubled peace and calm,
quiet moments, undisturbed,
moments constant and serene,
alone, with you, in prayer,
moments sheltered by your grace,
protected by your love,
held in your strong arms...
Such peace, such moments - all gems!
Jewels, strewn along our gritty path,
faith's river, rolling deep below,
you, present by our side,
your Spirit, lifting us to rise above
what keeps us down,
your grace, filling us, gently,
with moments of your peace...
When the peaceful moments come, Lord,
help us treasure and not miss them...
Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
