Coffee in the Morning |
Good morning, good God!
This morning, Lord, I offer you the United States of America:
its people and its government,
its power and its politics,
its history and its future,
its glory and its shame,
its laws and jurisprudence,
and its hope to be one nation,
under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all...
That's our pledged allegiance, that's our prayer
but in so many ways, Lord,
we're so far from being that one nation,
e pluribus unum, one people, united
in spirit, mind and heart...
We need your help, Lord, your healing,
in our anger, brokenness and discord:
we've lost a shared grasp
of a truth held in common;
we've lost the ability to disagree
with civility and respect;
we've lost the capacity to negotiate,
compromise and reconcile;
we've lost the desire to trust the good will
of those who oppose us...
we've lost the will to preserve a union
greater than our individual differences...
We need your help, Lord, and your healing...
Give us confidence and faith in someone
greater than ourselves;
give us zeal to prize the common good
as greater than our own;
give us wisdom, Lord, to guide us
through debate to good decisions
and the strength, desire and will
to do what's just and fair for all...
This morning I offer you my nation,
its people and its government;
we need your help, we need your healingbut start with me, Lord;
temper my anger and impatience;
open my mind and teach me to respect
other points of view;
help me find the truth that others bring;
help me to recognize my own prejudice and bias;
give me a heart for the common good
and the courage to give myself to it;
help me to trust in you, Lord,
and in your desire to make all things new...
This morning, Lord, I offer you the US of A:
its people and its government,
its power and its politics,
its history and its future,
its glory and its shame,
its laws and jurisprudence,
and its hope to be one nation,
under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all...
We need your help, Lord, and your healing:
in your mercy, hear our prayer...
Amen.
