NIGHT PRAYER: Monday 6/6

I don't fly all that often, Lord,

so I'm still amazed, as I am today,

to know I can leave Boston

and in four hours be in Colorado:

    a whole different part of the country,

    definitely west of the Missisip, 

    totally different terrain,

    and the weather - snow in June?

All just four hours away...

 

But you don't need to travel, Lord,

no need to move from here to there:

    you're already - everywhere...

 

For you, Lord,

there is no north or south, no east or west

for you encompass in yourself

the expanse of the universe, expanding,

or might it be a multiverse

at which we only wonder

while you know it inside out...

 

For you, Lord, 

Boston's not four hours from Denver,

you live beyond all time:

    you were - before time came to be;

    you're ever present in the now

       which is past before we know it;

    and forever will you be - in our future

        yet unknown, to be revealed...

 

In one and the same moment,

you walk the shore at Nauset

and scale the Rockies' lofty heights 

while this airbus lumbers west 

through the clouds in Jet Blue skies 

to Denver International, where you

who saw me off in Boston

are waiting patiently to greet me...

 

All time and space are in your hands, Lord:

as a child holds a ball so you hold us

- and all that is and was and will be -

safe within your heart, with love divine

and infinite solicitude for us

who make our way to you...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake

and watch over us while we sleep

that awake, we might keep watch with you

and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
