NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 8/11

I know some folks who make me impatient, Lord,

and I know many others who are impatient with me

    - and not without cause! 

 

I'm impatient with bureaucracies,

    with long queues, forms and paperwork

and with waiting for weeks for answers

    that end up offering no help...

And I'm impatient with myself, Lord,

    with my lazy inconsistency,

with the promises I often make

    - but fail to follow through on...

And truth be told, quite often,

    my impatience is with you, Lord:

with the time you take to act, to move, to answer me 

    as I had prayed you would...

But you, Lord - your patience  with me never ends...

 

You're patient with me

    while I renew a promise I failed to keep,

    or try again to do the right thing,

    or waste precious time on farce and folly...

 

You're patient with me

    while I put my own needs ahead of others'

    or prefer the sham to what's real and true,

    or avoid the truth to protect myself...

 

You're patient with me 

    while I act as if I didn't know you

    or fail to witness to your love,

    or lag behind when the Spirit moves me...

 

You, Lord, 

you know all my faults and failings

yet your patience with me never ends:

    you never point an accusing finger,

    you never impatiently tap your foot,

    you never stopwatch my sluggish pace;

but rather:

    you're always there with your kindness and mercy,

    you're always waiting for me to come home,

    you always give me another chance...

You, Lord, you who have more right than any

    to be short-fused and testy with me and my ways,

you, Lord, stand patiently by, with never a grumble,

    my loving and long-suffering friend...

 

Make me grateful, Lord 

    for your patience with me

and give me a share in your merciful love

    for me to share in this impatient world...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

and asleep rest in your peace...
