We ache in body, mind and soul, Lord
and I'm hard put to know which hurts the most:
the pain in bone and muscle?
the distress of baffled thoughts?
the ache of a broken heart?
I know folks who know such pain
and know that pain tonight, Lord
- in body, mind and soul...
Such pain is often overwhelming, isolating,
depressing and defeating
and leaves the one who suffers
with little hope or promise...
For these I pray tonight, Lord,
especially for those who find it hard to pray,
especially for those who are fatigued by perseverance...
especially for those who are chronically ill,
especially for those who suffer with anxiety,
especially for those who grieve in heart and soul,
especially for those who are plagued by overthinking,
especially for those who try to go it all alone,
especially for those who find it hard to ask for help,
especially for those whose hope is all but gone...
I pray for them to find
the consolation prayer can offer,
the second wind your Spirit brings,
relief from constant pain,
a peaceful calm within their thoughts,
acceptance of their need for help,
renewed trust and hope in you...
You came, Lord,
to heal and to mend us,
to comfort and console us,
to refresh and to restore us,
to give us hope in our despair,
to give us faith beyond our doubt,
to help us trust in our uncertainty
and I have no doubt you never fail
to offer all this grace
even and especially
when we can't see or hear or sense or find you,
when we're feeling all lone...
Break through, Lord,
tear down walls,
penetrate the darkness with your light;
invade the hearts of those in pain
with mercy, healing, peace - and hope...
Let nothing keep us, Lord,
from trusting in your love and care for us,
let nothing stay your healing
in our bodies, minds and souls...
Protect us, Lord, while we're awake,
keep vigil while we sleep,
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
