This coming weekend we will celebrate the Epiphany and we'll be singing "We Three Kings" in honor of the wise men who came seeking the new born King of the Jews - even though the gospel account offers no basis for this imagery! There's no denying, however, a certain wisdom in these magi who set out to find the source of all our wisdom: Jesus, the Word of God made flesh and come to dwell among us. In that spirit, then, tonight's prayer seeks the gift of wisdom...
As foolish as I am, Lord,
I'm wise enough to know
how much I need your wisdom...
how much I need your wisdom...
Teach me to desire Wisdom, Lord,
that I might seek her and find her,
that one day I might come to love her
just for who she is...
Teach me to keep watch for her,
to keep a quiet vigil
that one day I might come to love her
just for who she is...
Teach me to keep watch for her,
to keep a quiet vigil
in my mind and heart and prayer,
that I might hear her when she comes,
knocking on the door of my confusion,
that I might hear her when she comes,
knocking on the door of my confusion,
to offer me her counsel and advice...
Help me prefer Wisdom, Lord,
to my desire to be right;
help me choose Wisdom
above my proud and jealous ways;
help me follow Wisdom
lest I chase down wealth and power;
help me long for Wisdom
as companion for my soul;
help me consult with Wisdom
when discerning right from wrong;
help me seek out Wisdom
as the measure of my choices...
Be generous with your Wisdom, Lord,
and in the winter's darkness
let her light shine upon my path
that I might walk at her direction,
wherever she may lead...
Let her bring order to my chaos,
Help me prefer Wisdom, Lord,
to my desire to be right;
help me choose Wisdom
above my proud and jealous ways;
help me follow Wisdom
lest I chase down wealth and power;
help me long for Wisdom
as companion for my soul;
help me consult with Wisdom
when discerning right from wrong;
help me seek out Wisdom
as the measure of my choices...
Be generous with your Wisdom, Lord,
and in the winter's darkness
let her light shine upon my path
that I might walk at her direction,
wherever she may lead...
Let her bring order to my chaos,
reason to my foolishness
faith to solve my doubt, and truth
to keep me in your grace...
Let her come to me in prayer, Lord:
may I open at her knock
and welcome in her many gifts,
Let her come to me in prayer, Lord:
may I open at her knock
and welcome in her many gifts,
her blessing, light and peace...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
