Lord, your people have many ideas and opinions
about the military, armaments, war and peace:
some are hawks and others doves,
while all claim you their one true God...
But this weekend, Lord, help us lose the labels
and pause and remember in prayer
more than 1,300,000 men and women
who gave their lives for freedom's sake:
for us, they paid the price...
Some of these are family, Lord,
but most will be unknown to us:
nameless strangers, bound as kin
by homeland, heart and history
and the earnest hope
that generations yet to come
know the freedom and the peace
for which they gave their lives...
So, whatever we may think, Lord,
of armies, weapons, war and peace,
we all give thanks this weekend
for those who gave, gave all they had
to protect, defend, preserve, secure
the land and life that we call home today...
Amen.
Here's John Williams' Hymn to the Fallen, from the soundtrack of Saving Private Ryan. The video offers images of some of "the fallen" who gave their lives for us through the course of American history... Together, I hope the imagery and music will lead us all to prayer, to remember the fallen...
