I recently celebrated a funeral mass at Saint Catherine Church in Westford, MA.  It was my first time in this worship space which was enlarged and reconfigured some years ago, placing the altar in the center of the assembly.  The former sanctuary with its tabernacle has become a place set apart for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.  In this haven of a chapel there are four rocking chairs, each one comfortably padded, waiting to welcome those who drop by to sit for a while and spend some time with the Lord...

A rocking chair, Lord -
    that might be the very thing!

A comfy place to sit with you
    and while away some the hours
moving gently back and forth
    until my rhythm matches yours
and in the quiet we two move
    in prayerful syncopation...

Like two friends on a park bench, Lord,
    or on a front porch swing,
just spending time together
    in silent conversation,
speaking truly, heart to heart
    and not a word out loud...

A rocking chair or chesterfield,
    adirondack or recliner;
a wingback or a lounge chair
    a bean bag or a swivel;
or even sitting cross-legged
    top 'a mountain or a sandy beach:
all these would be a blessing
    just to sit, Lord, by your side...

Rock with me, Lord,
    pull up your chair, right next to mine
        and rock with me, Lord...

Amen.
