NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 11/14

A little background on this evening's Night Prayer...

 

Over the last couple of months I've had several occasions to be personally very grateful for the way some things turned out in my life.  And on those occasions I found myself uttering a very simple prayer that seemed to well up from a place deep in my soul - and that simple prayer was, "Thank you, Jesus!"  

 

Each time, those three words carried much more gratitude, meaning and substance than any three words might be expected to bear.  I suppose that puts "Thank you, Jesus!" in the same category of another three word sentence, "I love you!"   

 

Now I've found my "Thank you, Jesus!" prayer coming to my lips rather frequently, even daily - and in response not just to big concerns, but to small ones as well. It's in that spirit that I offer this Night Prayer...

Thank you, Jesus!

Thank you for this day now ending

    and for whatever it held or withheld from me.

Thank you for its blessings and its burdens,

    its laughter and its tears, 

    its mysteries and its answers,

    its hope and disappointments,

    its promise and fulfillment...  

 

Thank you, Jesus!

Thank you for the people in my day:

    for those who crossed my path

        and those whose footsteps echoed in my heart.

Thank you for my friends, Lord:

    for those who have been faithful,

    for those whose words have hurt me,

    for those who always have my back

    and those whom I now seldom see

    but cherish nonetheless as treasured gifts..

Thank you, Jesus!

Thank you, Lord for all the ways you touched my life today

    with  your healing, peace and mercy.

Thank you for the times your hand

    protected me from danger I was blind to

Thank you for the times I saw - and failed to see -

    you standing there beside me, close at hand...

Thank you, Jesus!

For I know that all good gifts,

   every grace and every blessing,

      come only from your hand.

Thank you for your patience, 

    for your wisdom and your Word,

for your counsel and compassion,

    and all the ways you come to me each day

        and through the night...

For what in your life today might you pray, 

    Thank you, Jesus!

And consider the blessings and gifts 

  you may have missed in your life today, and pray,

    Thank you, Jesus!

And just for the grace that brought us to prayer 

  at the end of this day, let us pray,

    Thank you, Jesus! 

 

Thank you, Jesus! 

Thank you, Jesus! 

Thank you, Jesus!    

  

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

    and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

    and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.
