O God, you are my God -
for you I long...
for you I long...
- Psalm 62
I do long for you, Lord,
I do long for you, Lord,
always - and in so many ways...
I long for your wisdom in my daily dilemmas:
for your counsel in my confusion,
for your Spirit's lead when I can't find my way,
I long for you, Lord, and for your wisdom...
I long for your peace in my family:
when misunderstandings and chips-on-shoulders
wedge their way between brothers and sisters,
parents and children, husbands and wives,
I long for you, Lord, and for your peace...
I long for your strength when my spirit falters:
when my will is weak and I lose my resolve,
when I haven't the courage to say and do,
what your word calls forth from my heart,
I long for you, Lord, and for your strength...
I long for your mercy:
when I fail to love as you've loved me,
when I fail to forgive as you pardon me,
when I fail to let go what needs forgetting,
I long for you, Lord, and for your mercy...
I long for your patience:
when I want things done - just my way -
and on my schedule, on my terms,
for my benefit, profit and favor,
and when I make no time for my neighbors
because something about them annoys me,
I long for you, Lord, and for your patience...
I long for your kindness:
when I'm self-absorbed and all in a hurry,
when I'm brusque and gruff and curt,
when my rough edges need a smoothing buff
to keep me from wounding another's heart,
I long for you, Lord, and for your kindnesss...
I long for your gentleness:
when I'm tempted to be rushed and less than careful,
when a warm, temperate spirit is what I need,
when I'm called to serve my friend in distress,
I long for you, Lord, and for your gentleness...
I long for your joy:
when anger and self-pity haunt my soul,
when envy and jealousy steal my cheer,
when like a child I whine and pout
and miss the simple joys of life,
I long for you, Lord, and for your joy...
And I long for your love:
when I'm lost in my stuff and toys and things,
when my heart's in need of your gentle presence,
when my soul is longing for you, my God,
I long for you, Lord, and your love...
O God, you are my God
- for you I long, always,
and in so many ways...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.

When my confidence deserts me
And my perseverance fades
When the darkness overwhelms me,
Lord, I look to you
Through the weight of sin and sorrow
You will teach me to rejoice
Through the fiery trials and darkest vale,
I long for you
When your goodness is my portion
And your blessings overflow
When your loving arms protect me,
Lord, I rest in you
You refresh my soul with wisdom
There is nothing that I lack
Through the pastures green and waters still,
I long for you
When my strength begins to falter
And my body waste away
When my earthly treasures fail me,
Lord, I cling to you
I will look to Christ my Savior
Where my soul is satisfied
And forever I am known and loved,
within your arms
