Pause for Prayer: TUESDAY 12/31

As the Candle Burns Down

It's almost New Year's Eve, Lord,
in a year that seemed so very new
not all that long ago...

Where has the old year gone, Lord?
And how did I spend, how did I live
these fleeting past twelve months?

How well I remember the times
we walked and talked, you and I,
and the peace of your companionship...

But I remember, too, the times
when I forgot, when I ignored
that you were by my side
while I, a fool, tried to make it on my own...

And I think of all the times you took delight in me
and all the times I sadly failed your love
in what I said and what I did,
in what I failed to say and do...

But you never failed me, Lord,
you never failed to love me,
to pardon and forgive me:
your grace so sweet and pure
and always freely given...

But now there comes a new year, Lord,
and with it comes my prayer
to grow in grace and love,
more faithful to your word...

Nurture in my soul, Lord,
a hunger for the truth,
a thirst for all that's holy,
a desire for your wisdom...

Wake my heart to 2025
to all your grace and gifts:
let a new year dawn tomorrow,
help me live it day by day...

Amen.
