NIGHT PRAYER: Wednesday 2/26

After writing this prayer, it occurred to me that it might "sound" more like a morning's Pause for Prayer than an evening's Night Prayer!  But it's the prayer that came to my heart - so here it is!

Just two more days of February, Lord!
Why is it that the shortest month
always seems so long?

Yesterday's mercury climbed its way up to 50˚,
stirring my soul with its warming trend
and opening my heart to hope and trust
that spring, at last, is on its way...

Your Spirit is moving within me, Lord,
waking me from my hibernation,
    my drowsy, dormant, wintered slump,
    my season of idle lethargy,
    my time-out, my downtime,
my lazy indulgence of squandered days
    and misspent nights...

Stir up your Spirit within me, Lord!
Rouse me, nudge me, stand me up!
Reboot my soul with newfound grace!
Spring-clean my mind and imagination!
Renew my desire to play and create!
Reopen my ears, my eyes and my nose
to hear you and see you,
to breathe in deeply
the scent of your presence
and the fragrance of nature
budding, blooming and coming to life...

Send your Spirit into my heart, Lord,
to open me to your Lenten* spring:
the gift of a season to help me remember
to return, to repent and to reconcile,
to reorder my life and restore my faith
in you and your promise
    of mercy and love...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

* Our word "Lent" derives from the Old English "lencten" which means springtime (from the "lengthening" of days!)

My readers know how much I love the music of (recently knighted) Sir John Rutter so I'm very pleased to have found this Rutter piece which was new to me!
