On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its lead from some element of the day's liturgy. Today is the Fourth Sunday of Lent, the halfway point in our journey towards Easter and the gospel for today is the story of the prodigal son who first makes a journey away from his father - and then a journey back home. His turning point was the moment when he came to his senses... We're "halfway home" to Easter and it might be just the time to see what progress we're making on our journey and if, indeed, we've "come to our senses..."
Lord...
When guilt and shame consume me
help me come to my senses,
remembering that your mercy never fails me...
help me come to my sensess,
trusting that your Spirit always guides me...
When I'm lost in grief and sorrow
help me come to my senses
and find in you my peace and consolation...
When I'm making foolish choices
help me come to my senses
and follow your word and wisdom...
When I'm impatient and quick-tempered
help me come to my senses,
helping others
as I'd have them help me...
When I'm alone, with no one else to turn to,
help me come to my senses
and lean on you,
my friend and my companion...
When I've backed myself into a corner,
help me come to my senses
and see that forward
is my only way to go...
When I'm jealous and selfish
help me come to my senses
and open my mind and heart to others,
especially those in greatest need...
When my heart is broken into pieces,
help me come to my senses
and welcome your gentle, healing touch...
When I see someone in need,
help me come to my senses
and recognize it's you
who needs my help...
When I've hit bottom,
help me come to my senses
and reach toward you to help and lift me up
When I fear what lies before me,
help me come to my senses
and trust: all shall be well...
Lord, help me come to my senses:
open wide my eyes, my heart,
my mind and my life
to find in you
the peace I seek and long for...
Nudge me, prod me, urge me,
poke and jab and push me,
knock me off my pins
and help me come to my senses, Lord,
and make my way back home to you...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep rest in your peace...
Amen.
This song is new to me and I'm grateful to have found it!
