Me, my parents, my brother and my sister |
Sunday, Lord, would have been
my parents' 80th wedding anniversary
and tomorrow,
my father's 111th birthday...
This photo brings back the joy of my youth
and happy, simpler, carefree times
- but it also recalls the worries and fears
of my adolescent, awkward growing pains...
I'm part of the story of these five Flemings,
each of whom wrote a part of my tale,
as we struggled to tend and care for each other,
to be a household, a family of love...
From my mother's womb to this very day,
no others, apart from you, O Lord,
have so closely shaped the man I've become
and the life I have lived and shared...
There's so much that I've forgotten, Lord,
so much I no longer remember,
but this I know and I won't forget:
how blessed I am and grateful
for the parents who gave me the life that's mine,
for the family I call my own...
Amen.
