I've returned from my eight day retreat at Eastern Point Retreat House in Gloucester, MA. I know that many folks will be asking me: "So, how was your retreat?" Well, because it was such a great and grace filled week - that's not an easy question to answer. It's amazing what can happen in eight days of silence! A retreat is an opportunity to spend some real quality time with Jesus - and as you might imagine, much of that is personal, intimate and not easy to bring to speech and share with others... Still, today's Night Prayer (my prayer as I left Eastern Point) is one way I can respond to the question, "How was your retreat?"
Because you first sought me, Lord,
(not the other way around)
you found and warmly welcomed me
to spend this time with you...
Because your patience never failed,
it was a week of growth for me...
it was a week of growth for me...
Because of your great mercy, Lord,
I found myself, again - and again -
I found myself, again - and again -
pardoned and forgiven…
Because you healed a wound or two,
my mended heart rejoiced...
Because you healed a wound or two,
my mended heart rejoiced...
Because you reached to lift me up,
my spirits rose anew...
Because your grace empowered me
I found the strength I needed...
Because you held me in your heart,
I rested in your peace...
Because you loved me as I am,
I faced the man I am,
whom you're calling me to be...
Because you always had my back,
I walked the week with trust...
I walked the week with trust...
Because you gave so lavishly,
I give you thanks and praise...
Because you kept your word, Lord,
and walked this week with me,
I look ahead with deeper faith
and confidence in you...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
I first heard this song (one of my all time favorites!) 13 years ago on retreat at Eastern Point....
Take, O Take Me As I Am by John Bell
