NIGHT PRAYER: Thursday 6/19

Most nights, Lord,

I'd love to lean my head on your shoulder

and just listen 

while you tell me a story

or sing me a song 

- or just hum softly -

until I fall fast asleep...

 

That would help me leave behind

this day's worries and burdens 

and save me from tossing and turning

over troubles yet to come...

Let my night prayer find your shoulder, Lord,
my heart lean close to yours;
help me hear your voice, your story,
the song you sing to calm my soul...

As you've brought me through this day, Lord,
be with me in my dreams
and be there in the morning
when I greet the new day's light...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake,
    keep vigil while I sleep
that awake, I keep the watch with you
    and asleep, rest in your peace...

whose trust, ever childlike, 

    no cares could destroy:
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled 

    at the plane and the lathe:
Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
your strength in our hearts, Lord, 

    at the noon of the day.
 

Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
your hands swift to welcome, 

    your arms to embrace:
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
your love in our hearts, Lord, 

    at the eve of the day.

 
Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
whose voice is contentment, 

    whose presence is balm:
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
your peace in our hearts, Lord, 

    at the end of the day.
