Today is the 56th anniversary of Neil Armstrong being the first human being to walk on the moon. Pope Leo had a phone conversation today with Buzz Aldrin, the second to set foot on the lunar surface. They prayed together these words from Psalm 8 which Aldrin had prayed from space on his return journey to earth:
I see your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place...
O Lord our God, how awesome your name
over all the earth!

Your glorious, beautiful moon, O Lord!
A great and natural oculus,
high in the dome of maples
sheltering my home,
guarding my driveway,
opening my soul
guarding my driveway,
opening my soul
to a light show begun
on the Fourth of Creation...
Then, for a blessed, peaceful moment,
it's not the moon I'm watching
but you, Lord,
your keen eye on me,
piercing the leafy canopy,
watching over the end of my day,
keeping your vigil over my dreams
'til your greater light
piercing the leafy canopy,
watching over the end of my day,
keeping your vigil over my dreams
'til your greater light
in the morning rise
to begin a brand new day...
to begin a brand new day...
We've gazed at your moon
we've sung of your moon,
we've walked on your moon
and slept the night
'neath its silvery face...
Help us walk now on earth, O Lord of light,
with the same, careful, gentle steps
that trod the virgin lunarscape
in wonder, awe and reverence...
O Lord, our God,
how awesome your name over all the earth!
O quarter moon, half moon, full moon bright,
as monthly phases wax and wane,
as monthly phases wax and wane,
pull me close with your tides of love
and shine your grace upon me...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
For your prayer and reflection...

As the Moon by Christopher Grundy
(The lyrics draw on how the moon draws the tides and the tides of our lives...)
Full Moon by Ludovico Einaudi
(Instrumental by a contemporary Italian pianist, known for the simplicity and beauty of his minimalist compositions)
The Moon's Song by Olivia Fern
(The moon sings to her child's burdened heart...)
I went for a walk
under the moon
and I asked her for a song,
to guide me on,
through the darkness,
through the darkness...
The darkness of my fears, when all else disappears.
Oh, the darkness of self doubt,
will burn out
all your lightness,
all your lightness...
So let go of the shadow
of shame and blame,
praise and gain,
you are more, just be who you are.
And she sang:
Child, be unafraid to shine,
be bold and bright
reflecting the light.
She sang:
Child, be unafraid to shine,
be bold and bright
reflecting the light.
She sang:
Child, be unafraid to shine,
be bold and bright
reflecting the light.
She sang:
Child, be unafraid to shine,
be bold and bright
reflecting the light.
Be bold and be bright, reflecting the light...
The Moon by Andy Beck
(A song for young voices, filled with mystery and dressed in beauty...)
O Moon
Shining in the night
O Moon
Are you listening?
O Moon
Silvery and bright
Come again tomorrow night
Come again tomorrow night
Nighttime will soon be done
Bringing the morning sun
Where will you go
What will you do?
While you are gone I'll wait
For you
O Moon
Shining in the night
O Moon
Are you listening?
O Moon
Silvery and bright
Come again tomorrow night
Come again tomorrow night
Shining in the night
O Moon
Are you listening?
O Moon
Silvery and bright
Come again tomorrow night
Come again tomorrow night
Nighttime will soon be done
Bringing the morning sun
Where will you go
What will you do?
While you are gone I'll wait
For you
O Moon
Shining in the night
O Moon
Are you listening?
O Moon
Silvery and bright
Come again tomorrow night
Come again tomorrow night
