Today is the feast of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153 AD). Some years back on this page I quoted his compelling words about the nourishment the scriptures offer us and the importance of treasuring God's Word in our hearts...
Where is God’s word to be kept?Lord, I know you have a word of me,
Obviously, in the heart, as the prophet says,
“I have hidden your words in my heart,
so that I may not sin against you.”
Keep God’s word in this way.
Let it enter your very being,
let it take possession of your desires
and your whole way of life.
Feed on goodness
and your soul will delight in richness.
Remember to eat your bread
or your heart will wither away.
Fill your soul with richness and strength.
If you keep the word of God in this way,
it will also keep you.
I know you have a word for me this night:
a word to feed the hollow places
in my hungry heart...
Help me, Lord:
help me make the time
and carve out a quiet place
where I can listen
for the word you have for me
where I can hear
the word you speak to me,
the word you have for me tonight...
Help me pray, Lord, help me stay
with whatever word
might feed my heart this evening...
Help me keep that word, cherish that word,
hold that word in my soul this night
and wake with it, on my lips,
come morning...
Help me find y0ur word, Lord,
the word you have for me tonight:
may it tame my desires,
heal my pain,
calm me and bless me...
may it feed and fill
the hungry, hollow places
in my mind, in my thoughts,
in my heart and in my soul,
in my life...
Somewhere in these words, Lord,
or in the silence deep inside me:
somewhere,
you have a word for me,
you speak a word to me,
a word you speak for me to keep
that your word might keep me...
Help me hear and keep your word, Lord:
speak... I long to listen to your voice...
Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...
Amen.
Tonight's song is different... the artist takes just two short lines from scripture (Philippians 4: 6-7) and builds a musical (and visual) meditation on those words... May this music bring you the peace that comes of God's word
finding its home in your heart...
