NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 9/19

These days it's easy to assume that other folks simply don't -or won't- listen to the truth - the truth that I hear so clearly and plainly.  Then I realize that the other people may be thinking just the same about me.  Thus, tonight's prayer: a prayer for me and for other people...

Open my ears, Lord
    that I might hear...

And open my heart
    that I might listen
        to what I hear...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to your voice,
        to your Word,
...        t0 your truth...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to the hard sayings, Lord,
        that I just don’t want to hear...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to the truth you reveal
        to me - about me...

Open my ears, open my heart
    when you judge and reprove me,
        counsel and guide me,
            address and correct my faults...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to what's solidly true
        in all that I hear and take in...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to your Spirit's wisdom,
        your counsel and guidance,
            your insight, prudence and grace...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to opposing views
        which offer me truth
            I'd not expected to find...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to hear what I screen out,
        refuse to acknowledge
            and reject and deny out of hand...

Open my ears, open my heart
    to never stop hearing
        thetruth when I meet it;
    to always be open
        to growing in knowledge;
    to learn and discern
        much more than I know,
            than I ever had dreamed or imagined...

Open my ears, Lord, and open my heart:
    to your silent presence within my soul;
    to your Spirit's whisper, deep in my thoughts;
    to the truth that leads me to justice and peace...

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake
    and watch over me while I sleep
that awake, I might keep watch with you
    and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Although the word truth has a strong place the scriptures and worship of the church, there are not that many songs dedicated to this virtue.  But John Becker's setting of the Beatitudes gets us there - and in beautiful fashion!

Blessed are the poor in spirit, longing for their Lord,
for God's coming kingdom shall be theirs.
Blessed are the sorrowing, for they shall be consoled,
and the meek shall come to rule the world.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth
to seek and to find the narrow way.
Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,
and lead me, Lord, today.

Blessed are the merciful, for mercy shall be theirs,
and the pure in heart shall see their God.
Blest are they whose hunger only holiness can fill,
for I say they shall be satisfied.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth
to seek and to find the narrow way.
Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,
and lead me, Lord, today.

Blest are they who through their lifetimes sow the seeds of peace;
all will call them children of the Lord.
Blest are you, though persecuted in your holy life
for in heaven, great is your reward.

Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth
to seek and to find the narrow way.
Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord,
and lead me, Lord, today.
