NIGHT PRAYER: Friday 9/26

We live day to day, Lord, 

    - 0r night to night -

but for you 

    there's neither day nor night

for you're not bound

    by orbits 'round the sun

nor by ebbing, flowing tides,

    phased by lunar light... 

     

For you, there's only now:

    our future, past and present

are all and only now for you,

    eternal keeper of our times

        for whom there is no time... 

 

And so, in your eternity

    you hold, you keep, you treasure

        my future, past and present,

all known to you, before all time,

    all present to your being

        without end, without beginning...

 

Then give me, Lord, the grace to rest

    content, at peace and calm

in the mystery of eternity

    where my soul meets you now, tonight,

and where, I hope and pray,

    my soul will spend forever

        in the day that never ends... 

  

Protect me, Lord, while I'm awake

    and watch over me while I sleep

that awake, I might keep watch with you

    and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

 

It's impossible to find words and lyrics to capture the eternal! But this beautiful hymn (and the way its arranged in a rolling, overlapping way) gives us a hint, an inkling, a glimpse...
