NIGHT PRAYER: Sunday 9/21

On Sundays, Night Prayer takes its lead from some element of the day's liturgy.  This evening our prayer springs from Saint Paul's words in the second scripture proclaimed at mass this morning:

First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers,
  petitions, and thanksgivings
be offered for everyone,
for kings and for all in authority,
that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life
  in all devotion and dignity...
It is my wish that in every place you should pray,
lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.
Oh, Lord!
How much we need to heed
the wisdom and words of Saint Paul!

How we need to offer all manner of prayers
    and in every place
for those who govern and lead us,
for those in seats of authority,
for those who make and enforce our laws...

We seek that tranquil, quiet peace
where we can live in harmony
        with friend and foe alike,
where, with honor and with dignity,
        we settle our differences
            without argument or anger...

I don't think we're asking too much, Lord,
'though I know that beyond prayer
we need to do our own part,
    we need to humbly sacrifice
        some envy, pride and ego
to reach some common, middle ground
        where consensus heals the breach...

Oh, Lord!
How much we need to heed
    the counsel of Saint Paul,
to see your grace, your Spirit
to heal and make us one...

Protect us, Lord while we're awake
and watch over us while we sleep
that awake, we might keep watch with you
and asleep, rest in your peace...

Amen.

Make us one, O Father, make us one,
In the love with which you love your Son.
Keep us yours united in your name,
So the world may know that Jesus came.
Show your glory that you share above,
Casting out our fear with perfect love.
Make us one, O Father, make us one.
As in heaven, let your will be done.

Make us one, O Jesus, make us one.
Pierce our darkness like the morning sun.
May our wars and selfish quarrels cease,
By your Spirit in the bond of peace.
Christ, in love for us, you humbly bled.
We submit to you our living Head.
Make us one, O Jesus, make us one.
For in you alone is vict’ry won.

Make us one, O Spirit, make us one.
Give us meekness for this race we run.
We unite, one body, many parts.
May the peace of Jesus rule our hearts.
Help us live our lives in one accord,
Without blemish for our coming Lord.
Make us one, O Spirit, make us one.
Now complete in us the work begun.
