Pause for Prayer: TUESDAY 10/21

 So much ugliness, Lord!
Ugly speech and sights and sounds,
    ugly rivalries and wars,
    ugly insults, lies and slurs,
ugly thoughts and plans and schemes
    ugly threats and confrontations
and the ugly mess we've made, Lord,
of the work that's ours to do...

But the world around me, Lord,
the world you've entrusted to our care,
your creation, Lord, persists
in its glorious autumn beauty
- at least the parts we've not yet spoiled,
wasted or destroyed...

So, in the midst of the ugliness, Lord,
don't let me lose sight of your beauty:
    the wonder of October,
cool days calling me for walks
a shoreline waiting just for me,
the glory of the turning leaves,
    sweater weather's welcome hug,
    chrysanthemums and cornstalks,
the frost upon the pumpkin patch,
    the season's final harvest,
    the sunlight fading early now
    and longer nights for resting
in your arms, in peace, in prayer...

Don't worry, Lord - I won't lose sight
of the pain and loss, of the war and hate
and the endless crushing poverty
that stalks and plagues the world:
just train my eyes, my heart and soul,
on the promise of your beauty,
persisting and enduring
and promising a day to come
when all things shall be well...

Amen.

I realize that this song may seem simple, wide-eyed and naive - but we were created in innocence, by the simplicity of God and intended to revel in the Maker's glory with wide-eyed wonder... That's what we've lost - and what we hope and pray to find again...
